Autism Alert Card The AutismAssociation and Western Australian Police Force teamed up to launch a new Autism Awareness initiative to help individuals with Autism when they encounter any situations with police and first responders. The launch took place on International Day of People with Disability alongside the launch of the Government’s State Disability Strategy, a 10-year plan towards a more inclusive Western Australia. The unique training program was developed to assist the Western Australia Police Force and increase their knowledge to respond to the needs of individuals with Autism. This was a peer-to-peer training program support by the Autism Association staff, with all of the Police involved being parents of sons or daughters with Autism. The partnership also led to the development of the Autism Alert Card. The card alerts emergency services that the person carrying the card has Autism and may require additional support. It emphasises that the Autism Alert cardholder may have difficulties in communicating and may show signs of stress. It also includes 2 named contacts who can offer their support in a difficult or emergency situation.

“The Police Officers involved in this project have family members on the Autism spectrum and it is a reminder that Police Officers are not immune from personal challenges and understand the difficulties many vulnerable members of our communities are going through. The Autism Alert Card initiative, not only demonstrates a commitment from the WA Police Force to showcase their commitment to treat everyone with dignity and care; it also reinforces the Police Force’s values - to act in the best interests of vulnerable people and in particular in providing an opportunity to

divert people, where appropriate, from the justice system to a responsible adult or carer.” Dominic Wood - WA Police, Superintendent, Community Engagement Division
